Twilight Prophecy
Rated: G
By: Zen Clarke
Fiction: Zelda Twlight Princess. Don't insult me by thinking I meant the book Twilight.
Summary: Set Pre-events of TP, with a young Midna.

"But, Your Highness, I don't understand why you feel such a great need to --"

"I have my reasons. Last time I checked, I was the ruler of this place, not you," the Queen barked at Zenthos, her overall annoying adviser. She held the wolf pup in her arms as it slept throughout the commotion. She looked up, startled, as her daughter, Midna, came barreling through the castle doors and out to where they were, shortly followed by Zant, Zenthos's son.

"Mother!" she called, running up and hiding behind her legs. She peaked her head around them to look at Zant as he crossed his arms and pouted. "Zant bit me again!" Her mother sighed, obviously annoyed.

"Honestly, Zenthos, can't you control your son? He needs a good spanking."

"I don't believe in spanking," Zenthos smiled sheepishly. The Queen rolled her eyes.

"You wouldn't," she muttered. "Please. Go into the castle and attend to your duties. I will be just fine, thank you very much." Zenthos grudgingly obliged, and shooed his son back towards the front steps. She suddenly heard a gasp.

"Mommy! A puppy! Can I hold him? Please?" she cried, reaching for the wolf. Its eyes blinked open, and he stared at her. She leaned in close to him, and he licked her nose. She giggled. The Queen sighed, and handed her daughter the pup.

"He's no ordinary puppy, my dear," she said softly.  "He's from the Light World." The little girl gasped.

"How'd he get here?" she asked in wonder.

"The Sages brought him here, using the portal. They're going to return shortly, and take him to a small town in their world -- Ordon, I think."

"Why'd they bring him here if they're just gonna take him away again?" Midna whined slightly.

"Don't whine, Midna," her mother chided. "Do you remember the poem you learned a few weeks ago? The old nursery rhyme?" Midna sighed, sadly. She'd had to rehearse the stupid poem about a million times to her mother.

"I hardly see why it matters --"

"Just say it." Her mother scowled.

"One part Light,
One part Shadow,
A half and half will be sired.
Bravest of Braves,
Boldest of Bolds,
He'll save our worlds.
When in Light he will be of their kind,
When in Shadow he will become a feral beast.
Bravest of Braves,
Boldest of Bolds,
He'll save our worlds."

She then grumbled something about the poem not rhyming and hardly a real poem because of that.

"My dear," the Queen said tenderly, "that poem is more important to our world than you may ever know." The pup climbed up onto Midna's shoulders and decided that climbing down onto her back and settling down would be fun. Midna had to double over so he didn't slip down, and she sent him a dirty look. He simply panted in reply and looked like he was grinning, before snuggling down to go to sleep.

"How could a poem about some weirdo be related to the puppy?" she asked, now seemingly annoyed by the sleeping dog on her back. The Queen sighed, decided she may never get her point across, and chose to simply pat her daughter on the head, and pick the sleeping wolf up.

"One day, you will understand." As Midna opened her mouth to retort, five men with masks for faces appeared through the portal. Midna's mouth hung open in astonishment.

"We are sorry we had to burden you, Your Highness," they all bowed.

"It's fine," she replied kindly, and handed them the small wolf.

"Things are not looking well," one of them said in hushed tones to the Queen.

"They will get much worse in the coming years," she replied grimly. "But we must wait for the Beast to become an adult." They nodded sadly. "Will you ever tell him of his heritage?" They shook their heads.

"Some things are better left unsaid. The Ordon village will take good care of him. He will be the oldest, as there are no other children yet. However, the mayor's son's wife is expecting a child soon. And the adolescents are growing up. Many will be getting married and having children in the coming times."

"At least he won't be lonely," she said sadly.

"We will watch over him." They turned and left back through the portal.

Time passed. The Queen became ill, and passed away in only a year's time. Midna was too young to become the crowned queen, so Zenthos, who was next in line, took over until Midna was old enough to take over, though Zant constantly asked if he could be king. No one would ever answer him when he asked. None of them wanted to crush his dreams.

Meanwhile, the pup -- who turned back into a human once he crossed over into the Light world -- grew to be a strong ranch hand, who knew nothing of his heritage, and never asked. To him, all the family he needed was right there in Ordon village.

Until one day when he was knocked unconscious by a pig headed mule. Until he woke up to find his friends were all missing. Until he fell into another world entirely. Until he turned into a wolf and fell unconscious. Until a little imp who seemed very familiar saw him. Until she understood what her mother had told her long ago about an interesting nursery rhyme that didn't rhyme, and a small wolf pup.

Until a Twilight Prophecy made hundreds of years ago, called everything from poem to nursery rhyme and back, slowly began to unfold before Midna's very eyes.
No. It is not Twilight as in Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. I can actually write characters, thank you very much. Anyway, it shouldn't hold any real spoilers, but you have to admit, if you don't know it by now, it's a shocker that you've gone for 3 years without finding out the end. It's like not finding out what happens in the 7th Harry Potter book. It's impossible to avoid. Anyway, R&R.
